Reflection and Response

Which of your pieces was the most challenging to write? Give three reasons and explain:

The most challenging piece of writing that I wrote this semester was probably the descriptive essay. One reason was that I had to think of different adjectives to describe the event that was going on. Also, I had a hard time thinking of something that I could talk about descriptively and it really took me a long time to finally decide what to write. Lastly, I didn’t know how to explain different happenings through words from what I experienced. For example, what I felt, heard, or saw; I didn’t know how to write it out so that people reading it could understand. Overall, the descriptive essay was probably the most challenging piece of writing to me.

Which of your pieces was the most enjoyable to write? Give three reasons and explain.

The piece that I most enjoyed writing was the Credo Presentation. One reason that I really enjoyed it was that it was special compared to other pieces of writing, where it wasn’t writing an essay, it was presenting in front of the class. I really enjoyed that and it was the piece that stuck out the most to me. Another reason was that it made me really think back on my life and what I believed. When I first heard the prompt, I was stuck on what to talk about. But as I thought back on what happened in my life so far, it made it easier to think of what to talk about and what I really believed in life. The last reason was that I was able to share with my classmates what I did in my life. I really think that my “story” is quite unique in Hong Kong and I just felt that it was a good experience to share it with my classmates. Overall, the Credo Presentation was the most enjoyable piece of writing to write to me.

What are my strengths and weaknesses as a writer?

I believe that my strength as a writer is that my overall idea or plan for writing is really good and unique. However, the weakness is that I don’t know how to express my thoughts into words and into the essay. I also want to write something and I know it in the back of my head, but when I actually try to write it in word forms in an essay, I get stuck and don’t know what words to use. This is what I believe my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer.

What have you done to develop your strengths and minimize your weaknesses as a writer? How successful do you feel you have been? Explain.

Some things that I have done to develop my strengths throughout the semester is to think more creatively and more uniquely. Some ways I have done that were by reading books with good creatively and very unique stories. For example, a book I read was “Illuminae” by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. I really enjoyed reading that book and learning about their unique plots. I feel that I have been successful in developing my strengths and making it even stronger. Some things I have done to minimize my weakness was just by writing more and practicing my writing. I believe that that is the only way to minimize my weaknesses and become a better writer. I feel that my writing has improved a bit but not by a significant amount.

What kind of future career or field of study are you considering? What kinds of writing might be important in this career or field? Explain, giving specific examples.

Some fields of study that I am considering are accounting or engineering. For accounting, I will need to be able to compose various types of written documents like letters and financial statements. Accounting requires analysis of statistics and I will need to learn how to summarize the analysis and be able to express it in words. For engineering, I will need to be able to writing reports on incidents, analyses, projects, etc. Again, I will need to know how to express my thoughts into words so that people reading it can understand what happened.

What advice would you offer the College Writing teachers as they plan this unit for next year? What might be some additional pieces of writing to add and why? How were the timing and pacing? Did you receive enough feedback? Did you receive enough instruction and input so you knew how to do each assignment? You can make specific comments about specific assignments here. What did you like or not like and why? What would make this unit more student-friendly, provide more learning, or make it more interesting? Explain.

Some advice I would offer to the teachers is to explain each writing piece more specifically so that students understand what to write about. I feel that the amount of writing and the timing of it was fine and there was enough time for us to finish the writing in time. As I mentioned above, I really enjoyed the Credo presentation as it was something that was different compared to the different writings that we did. I feel that this unit is already pretty student-friendly and a class that everybody enjoys.
